Merrow CE Infant School – where children matter most

At Merrow CE Infant School we plan and teach a creative and engaging curriculum. We are determined to provide the best quality teaching and learning for every child. We plan a full and rich curriculum which we feel meets the needs of our children, including a mastery approach. The curriculum is designed to enable everyone to achieve an excellent academic start in a creative, fun and hands-on environment.

Teachers plan using a cross-curricular topic-based approach where the drivers below can be explored through a range of different subject areas. We also place emphasis on our school values of kindness & courage, perseverance & responsibility, fairness & respect,            honesty & trust which are explored through classroom work and beyond.

As a Church of England school, we aim to promote Christian and British values in everything we do and this is an important part of our ethos.

At the heart of our curriculum is a strong, in-depth knowledge of each and every child. Planning the curriculum starts with knowing the class, knowing where each child is, knowing where the gaps are, and what the next steps are.

We are committed to fostering a love of learning; we want our children to be enthused and inspired in their learning, their play and their interactions with each other.

Merrow CE Infant School Curriculum Implementation

Our curriculum delivers the requirements set out in the 2014 National Curriculum for Key Stage One (KS1) and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) requirements for children in Reception. Our Religious Education curriculum delivers the requirements of the 2017-22 Surrey Agreed Syllabus. In addition, our curriculum is enriched by our school’s ethos, values and aims, resulting in a unique Merrow school curriculum which reflects young children’s interests and needs and is influenced by local factors such as our linked church St John’s, local traditions and village life.

Our school curriculum encompasses the EYFS Prime and Specific Areas of Learning and the KS1 core subjects of English, mathematics and science, combined with the foundation subjects of art, computing, design and technology, geography, history, music, personal social and health education and physical education.

Threaded through these subjects and part of all of them is the subject of spiritual, moral, social and cultural education, which is a significant contributor to Collective Worship. This school considers Religious Education as a core subject, which is taught in both EYFS and KS1.
